Free Trade Union Development Center

FTUDC is an independent trade union centre that works in various sectors. The Liberal Economic Policy introduced to Sri Lanka in 1977 which was affected the TU movement directly.  There was a huge reaction from the working people. The traditional TU centre had called a General Strike in 1980 July. The right-wing government banded the strike and vehemently crushed the worker's movement. The government was throwing out 100,000 workers from their workplaces. Over 24 workers were compelled to suicide because they couldn't face society with their families. The Trade Unions was called the strike although they wouldn't call off it. Over 12,000 private sector workers have not received better compensation.

Consequently, the Free Workers Forum was brought about in 1998. Almost 56 TU's representing different sectors participated. After a series of extensive discussions those who adopted a movement with neither traditional trade union pattern nor with the party political aspirations caused the establishment of Free Trade Union Development Centre in the year 2000.

We have Over 40 years experience of in the Open Economic System. It created enormous problems for the worker's movement as well as the mass movement. The newly appointed government some measures has for controlling it but no solution for inflation, unemployment, constitutional reforms, electoral system and better democracy in the country. 

Objectives

To guide the workers and their organizations in the formation of independent unions without political affiliation to encourage and organize the formation of such unions and to cause unity amongst them.

Work for the building of peace and democracy.

Promote worker's welfare and thrift schemes.

Uplift women worker's conditions and child care.

Promoting Environmental protection

Promote interrelation with national and intentional originations to share the experiences.
